The power of sound

Share

Around 2010, I met ‘Abuelo’, a man who had come into contact with various cultures during his life. He had spent years in India and shared his knowledge of breathing and sounds with me. Looking back now, these were two very important elements in my healing process. If you incorporate them into your weekly schedule at least three times a week, preferably more, you will discover how sounds combined with breathing have an increasingly profound impact on your well-being, but also on your general health.

EK – ONG – KAR – SAT …

These sounds originate from Sanskrit and are repeated in several mantras. When you combine each of these sounds with a specific breathing technique, it has a completely different effect than how they are usually used in mantras.

Abuelo taught me this technique about 15 years ago. At first I didn’t feel much, probably because I still had a lot of health problems at the time, was very tense, had poor posture and my chakras were completely out of balance. Still, I felt that these sounds would help me and I persevered. Gradually, I felt the sounds vibrating in my body. It became a kind of internal massage that gently affected the chakras, helped my body relax and brought me into a ‘meditative’ state.

Today, I can remedy many everyday complaints such as soft back pain, headaches, fatigue, etc. thanks to this powerful technique.

Sound and emotion

When we hear a child making sounds, we can easily empathise with their state of mind. Sounds are literally a sounding board for our inner world. Music that we improvise ourselves also gives voice to our inner world. I experienced this for years when I worked as a music therapist with people who had difficulty speaking. The music spoke for them.

The reverse is also true. Sounds can touch emotions and enable us to let them go. Sounds are vibrations and these affect the body’s energy system. When we hold on to emotions, the flow of energy is blocked. With the help of sounds, this flow of energy can be set in motion again and the e-motions are released.

This is a well-known principle in Eastern culture. There, sounds, breathing and movement are combined in many disciplines to get energy moving again and thus release blocked emotions.

The Taoist technique I have learned is accessible to everyone, it is very simple and helps to remove blockages in a gentle way. Energy can flow without leading to intense, overwhelming emotions

Impact of sound according to science

Much research has been done on the impact of sound on humans. Many people know that sound and music influence our mood and can lead to relaxation or restlessness, depending on the type of music.

The impact goes beyond that. Sounds also influence our bodies at a cellular level. I read a very interesting book on this subject: The Tao of Sound from Fabien Maman. This article is the publication in Pub Med of the relevant research. Highly recommended for anyone who works with sound and music.

In practice

There are many ways to work with sounds and music. You can find lots of videos on YouTube.

If you would like to learn the two techniques that I use specifically, you can do so by participating in the free workshop on “Rebalancing chakras through sounds and brain exercises” or the free sessions “Practice together“.
